...(how many remember "The Light of Truth" or "I Love Him"--the melody was like "Old Black Joe"), and the hymnal became blander and a bit more "generic." It's true that I very much value some contemporary arrangements, such as the Bill Gaither Vocal Band's powerful rendition of Gloria's "I Then Shall Live"--but why is it that in many congregations of the Church of God the heritage hymns are quite neglected nowadays--have we simply strayed from their message?

When choirs concentrate on tickling the listeners' ears with pleasant rhythms and melodies, instead of proclaiming from the soul the message of truth, we have lost something precious. I remember...in the times of the Soviet Union, when Christians there observed the Western practice of applause following special music in the churches, they inquired, "Shouldn't the glory go to God?"
